The provincial trainer took Chantilly by storm when his bargain buy Saonois, whom he owns in partnership with baker Pascal Treyve, won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club this summer. The pair had bought the colt for the equivalent of about HK$80,000 and Gauvin saddled him three times in minor grade before he broke his duck in a claimer. They reportedly turned down 7million euros for the horse from a Qatari Sheikh after his G1 win and Gauvin then sent him to Longchamp to win the G2 Prix Foy. With 49 horses in his stable, Gauvin has won 39 winners and over 1.9 million of prize money this season, sitting in the top 10 in the French trainers championship, ahead of such luminaries as Freddy Head, Pascal Bary and Robert Collet.
